LBA Airport Memo June 2022

As discussed in the June 11 meeting, the following is a e-mail received from Michelle Muoio, Manager of Sikorsky Airport with information for notifying airport operations of loud and/or low flying aircraft in the area.  The airport management has been responsive to our concerns but we want to be sure that they are made aware of the volume and frequency of the traffic as a matter of record.

We would love for Laurel Beach Association residents to know that we still welcome them to submit official noise complaints to the airport either by phone or by submitting a web form. The web form is available at the following link: https://veoci.com/veoci/p/form/k5755ge5xrwr. If folks would like to directly speak with someone at the airport instead, my staff can be reached at 203-576-7497 from 6am through midnight to take the information. In either scenario, it is helpful to us if residents provide as much information as possible. The time, the location, aircraft information (if possible), and other relevant details. This helps us understand the situation and follow up with the operator, if needed. Many folks like to use the following publicly accessible website to track a view aircraft activity https://www.flightradar24.com/. They also have an app as well.

I will be in touch with more information regarding the rehab project of our preferred noise abatement runway (Runway 11-29). We are planning for a Spring construction at the moment, but don’t have a firm schedule yet.

LBA Airport Memo December 21, 2021

On December 9, a committee of LBA members met with Sikorsky Airport Manager Michelle Muoio and Air Traffic Control Manager Robert Shugrue at the airport to discuss increased air traffic and noise over our neighborhood.  This has been an ongoing concern formally brought to the attention of the airport management in 2019 but the traffic volume and sound level has been notably pronounced this past summer.

Sikorsky Airport has two runways; 6-24 that directs departures and arrivals in a SW-NE straight line over LBA, and 11-29, the longer of the two which is the preferred runway for noise abatement and is further from LBA in its approach.  11-29 has been much less accessible through this year while pavement repairs, re-texturing and other maintenance has been performed shifting more of the daily traffic onto 6-24 and resulting in more activity over LBA this past season.  The managers expect further maintenance and safety upgrades to continue on 11-29 through 2022 along with the volume of traffic out of 6-24.

As in the past, airport operations have invited our residents to submit official noise complaints to the airport either by phone or by submitting a web form. The web form is available at the following link: https://veoci.com/veoci/p/form/k5755ge5xrwr.  If residents would like to speak directly with someone at the airport, Michelle and her staff can be reached at 203-576-7497 from 6:00 am through midnight to take the information.  In either scenario, it is helpful to provide as much information as possible including the time, location, aircraft information (if possible), and other relevant details. This helps the airport understand the situation and follow up with the operator. Apart from visual reporting which can be difficult, callers may prefer to use the following publicly accessible website to track and view aircraft activity https://www.flightradar24.com/data/airports/bdr.  This gives all essential information about the type of aircraft; flight number, direction, elevation and speed needed by the airport.  The smartphone app “Flight Radar 24is probably more convenient and is available from your app store.

There are plans for a public information meeting to discuss environmental assessment, progress and program of upgrades to 11-29 including noise abatement in late January, circumstances permitting.  LBA will receive an invitation and notification will be sent when the formal date is set.  Meanwhile the committee will continue to alert airport authorities to loud and low flying aircraft and look to work with city, state and federal government as well as neighboring communities similarly affected by this situation.
